Choosing a Diploma or a Degree

When a prospective student applies for admission to The Landing School, he or she must select either a diploma or degree option. The educational programs are identical; students in both the diploma and degree programs study and work together. The difference between the two programs is the amount of time required for completion, and the addition of general education courses required for the degree option.

A student who plans to attend only one year at The Landing School must apply for the diploma program. If a student who earns a diploma decides to extend his or her education at The Landing School, that student may re-apply as an applicant to the degree program.

A student who plans to successfully complete two programs at The Landing School over two years is encouraged to apply to the degree program.

Admissions Considerations

As part of the application review process, the Admissions Committee considers the personal goals of prospective students, as well as their enthusiasm about the marine trades. Though The Landing School does not require former experience with boats, woodworking, systems or design, an applicant's experience can enhance an application. Applicants must have a high school diploma or a certificate of high school equivalency (GED), though a number of Landing School students come with college degrees.

Math skills are an important ingredient in the successful completion of the Yacht Design Program; for this program only, entering students must demonstrate current proficiency in second-level high school Algebra (Algebra II), Trigonometry and Geometry.

Application Procedure

Before applying, please make sure you've thoroughly reviewed The Landing School Catalog. Each application for admission requires:

1. Completion of an application that you can download and mail or fill out online.

2. Submission of a written essay (via e-mail or mail) that describes your reasons for wanting to attend The Landing School, the features of the program(s) you find most interesting, a challenging project you have undertaken, and how you plan to use the knowledge and skills you acquire at The Landing School.

3. Submission of two letters of reference, preferably from employers or teachers.

4. Submission of a certified copy of your college or high school transcripts.

5. A personal interview with an admissions representative.

The Landing School reviews completed applications on three separate dates in January, March, and May prior to the start of the upcoming academic year. Your application will not be reviewed until all required submissions have been made and an interview has been completed. The School strongly encourages early applications since spots in each of the academic programs are offered to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants are notified of their admissions decision within two weeks following the review by the Admissions Committee.

Once all programs are filled, additional qualified applicants are placed on a waiting list and are notified of openings as they become available. Wait-listed students are also given the option to defer their enrollment until the subsequent school year without having to reapply. Even at late times during the admissions process, interested applicants should apply for possible openings. Each year there are inevitable last-minute changes in circumstances for some enrolled students who must withdraw; so a small number of spaces may become available immediately prior to the start of the school year.
