Wooden Boat Building
Wood Construction Course | Wood Composite Construction Course
The Wooden Boat Building Program offers two course concentrations, Wood Construction (formerly called "Small Boats") or Wood Composite Construction (formerly called "Cruising Boats"). Students must select one concentration when applying to the program. The courses are conducted separately in different shops, but the students in both courses reguarly converge for classroom time.
The courses both instruct students in the construction of both traditional and
modern boats using wood as the principal material, however the Wood Composite Construction Course also incporates composite materials, such as fiberglass or carbon, into the construction of the hull, interior and parts.
The Wood Construction Course is ideal for
people who want to learn the traditional boatbuilding skills used for generations while
incorporating time-saving and effi cient tools and materials. The boats built in this program
are generally traditional designs re-imagined by contemporary designers who discovered
ways to enhance the longevity and durability of wooden boats with modern methods.
Students in the Wood Composite Construction Course learn how to complement wood with man-made composite materials
and glues in order to enhance
the strength, durability and speed of the finished product. Cold-molding is the primary construction method in the Wood
Composite Construction Course, which results in a lightweight, stiff and durable boat.
