About Todd Berman, instructor

Todd Berman's sailing experience spans boats ranging from dinghies to IOR maxis. After a successful collegiate sailing career, Todd pursued sailing racing aboard dinghies and J24s in the early 80s then progressing to IOR and IMS 50 footers. Todd worked in the Sail making industry from 1987 to 1992.

He has participated in six One-Design World Championships and his sailing career has led him to events in Japan, France, England, Italy, Israel, Germany and all over the United States. He has raced in events such as Kiel Week, Cowes Week, The Bermuda Race, Key West Race Week, and has participated in Block Island Race Week over twenty times. Some of Todd's most notable finishes include three top 10 finishes at the J24 World Championships, most notably a win as bowman in the 1985 event in Japan. As crew, Todd was the 470 class national champion in 1985, and in 1989 as tactician was victorious in the last old style ocean Racing Southern Ocean Racing Circuit (SORC). More recently, Todd's victories as helmsmen have included North American Championship wins in the highly competitive J105 class in 1998 in Newport, Rhode Island and 1999 in San Francisco, California.

Todd holds a Master Captain's license for off-shore waters on vessels up to 100 tons. He has cruised and done deliveries covering the eastern seaboard from Florida to Nova Socia. Todd operates New Yankee Marine Services which offers a full range of marine related services from eagle watching to race coaching and yacht deliveries. Currently, Todd is working with the design firm of Morrelli & Melvin on the development of a high performance hybrid motor/sailor.

Todd has been teaching sailing since 1979 where he started teaching with Bill Gladstone at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club. Todd has also been an Instructor for J World in Key West Florida and on run several other yacht club sailing programs. Todd is principally employed as a Senior Environmental Analyst for the law firm of Robinson & Cole in Hartford, Connecticut and is an adjunct faculty member at Rensslaer Polytechnic Institute in the School of Environmental Management and Policy.
